CONS:
The usmile U3 is a very good choice for an affordable electric toothbrush. It stands out because of its long battery life that can reach up to 9 months for the lowest speed setting and up to 4 months for everyday cleaning. It comes with a pressure sensor, small cases for its brush heads, and creative packaging.
When it comes to electric toothbrushes, many already have favorite brands, with the most popular ones being Philips Sonicare and Oral-B. However, there are also some stand out products available at lower prices that also come with amazing quality. The product that we will review to see if it is a perfect fit for you is the usmile U3 Electric Toothbrush. This article will review what’s in its box, its different cleaning modes, its cleaning performance, and more.
What/Who is usmile?
usmile is a Chinese company under Guangzhou Stars Pulse Company which develops various products for teeth hygiene, skin care, and more. They are known for winning several international design awards because of their creative packaging. They are one of China’s most trusted electrical appliances companies because of their reliable products. They have patented a swing test technology imbued in their electrical brushes which further distinguishes them.
The usmile u3 Electric Toothbrush is their mid-range product. It comes with a lot of cleaning modes primarily designed for everyday cleaning, soft brushing, and teeth whitening. The product is highly praised by many because of its very long battery life and good packaging.
What is in the box?
Included in the box are two brushing heads and a USB connector for charging. They supply you with two whitening brush heads which have tough bristles. This may make it a little harder to use for those who want gentle cleaning if they have previously damaged tooth enamel and sensitive teeth. These are contained in a small plastic case to make it hygienic to carry around in a bag. The company offers other brush heads that can be purchased separately in case you have specific needs. This can also be used with other usmile electric toothbrush products.
The main unit has an oblong shape. It feels comfortable to hold yet does not have any ridges on its side. This makes it easier to slip on your hands when it is wet. It is light to hold yet sturdy in design which makes it comfortable to brush your teeth with. The packaging’s creativity is also seen with the brush. It has tiny bits of black or white glitters, depending on the version that you bought, that makes it look aesthetically pleasing.
The unit has three buttons. The top one is a circle button for power. The ones below it allows you to choose the specific cleaning mode you will use which includes whitening, soft, massage, and clean. These are soft and easy to press. Adequate instructions on how to use it are included in its user manual.
The usmile package usually is $69.99, however we have been able to get a special coupon code so you can save money on your purchse. When ordering please use code 30727RTP and save $21, making it only $48.99 which is a 30% savings on an already nicely priced set. At this price you really can't go wrong.
Please note that this coupon code applies to the White and Black versions.
Battery life
The main selling point of the product is its claim of being able to last until 6 months upon being fully charged for four hours. This is a big promise as popular brands like Sonicare and Oral B can only last up to 2 months at most even when using the same battery (Lithium ion). Because of this, we immediately tried charging the product completely and testing it to see if it lives up its claims.
Upon testing, it was able to live up to its claim, but only for the soft mode. When fully charged, it can last as long as 19 hours when running, which when calculated for everyday brushing, can last up to 9.5 months. This is a great achievement that makes it very good for carrying around on trips without worrying about its battery life.
The other modes were heavier for the battery. Upon testing, the clean mode which is recommended for everyday cleaning, lasts for up to 4 and a half months as it can last for 9.5 hours in total. The whitening mode which uses more battery lasts for up to 8.5 hours or up to 4 months and a week. Overall, its battery health is very impressive and is on par or even better than popular brands.
The unit is charged by pulling down the rubber sleeve on its bottom and attaching the USB charger. As mentioned, its charging can take up to 4 hours. We recommend you to always fully charge it once it runs out of battery to remove the hassle of doing so every month.
Performance
Our main tool for measuring performance is through the number of vibrations that the product can do per minute. With fast vibrations, the brush will be able to clean the edges of the teeth that are usually hard to reach with manual brushing with the use of sonic vibrations and micro bubbles. The usmile U3 has a rate of 38,000 vibrations per minute which was lower than the average rate of Oral B and Sonicare which is in the 40-60 thousand range. Even with this, we still find the brush to be effective in cleaning the teeth as it provides adequate speed for breaking down plaque and whitening the teeth.
When using the soft mode, you should expect even less vibrations from the product.
Cleaning
The product comes with rounded bristles made by DuPont. This is preferred because it cleans the teeth gently and does not damage the surface. As mentioned above, it mainly relies on sonic vibrations for cleaning the teeth. These are designed with a diamond-shaped cross section to provide a good cleaning that is spread out through the teeth. We found it to have good performance for all its modes. To get the best cleaning, it is better to purchase additional brush heads that best match the mode you would use. This is also because they usually depreciate in quality in about 3 months of use.
