PROS:
CONS:
Privacy Guard is a good option in terms of ID theft protection services. It has all the features included by major competitors and more, it is affordable and offers a14 day trial for just $1. They could be more transparent about their pricing, since they’ve received quite a number of complaints on that matter and because of their misleading marketing practices.
Privacy Guard is an identity theft protection service offered by Trilegiant Corporation in conjunction with Trilegiant Insurance Services Inc. and Alliance Marketing Association, as mentioned on their website. The company is based in Stamford, Connecticut and in addition to ID theft protection services it also offers credit reports and scores and credit monitoring services.
In order for you to sign up with Privacy Guard, you have to get through their 3 steps. The first one is filling in your general information. Next, you have to complete your login information and lastly, you have to go through the verification & billing details step. You will be required to provide your social security number, card number, expiration date and security code.
Privacy Guard’s ID theft protection service includes several features. Your 3 major credit files from the 3 major bureaus will be scanned on a daily basis. In case of any changes (such as a new account being opened, changes in address, etc.) you will be immediately alerted. If there are no modifications, you will still get a notification every month letting you know that everything is okay.
You will also get monthly access to your 3 credit reports, in order to check their accuracy for yourself.
In case you become an ID theft victim anyway, Privacy Guard offers assistance throughout the entire recovery process (when you have to contact creditors, file paperwork and so on).
One other useful thing you’ll get when signing up for Privacy Guard is Norton Internet Security Online, which is a bonus.
You also get access to their Credit Information Hotline, which is a toll-free support center that will inform you on everything you should know about your credit reports.
Privacy Guard is not the most transparent company on the market when it comes to pricing. There is no visible “Pricing” section on their website. The only thing they advertise is their 14 days trial charged with only $1. However, if you hit the “Try it now” button, you will be directed to the sign up form and only there you can find out that unless you cancel the trial yourself, they will continue to bill you $19.99/month, for as long as you remain a member. Don’t expect this clause to be written in capital letters, because you almost need a magnifying glass in order to read that text.
