Aside from Adobe or Corel, Nero is probably one of the most recognizable media editing software on the market. This video editing software has two main modes you can use to edit your videos. It has an average sized library of preprogramed objects and effects so you can fully customize any project you’re working on. Due to its distinct workflow, this software has a small learning curve you’re going to have to overcome before fully mastering the program.

Performance and Features

Nero Video 2017 comes with two main editing modes: Express and Advanced editing. Although they are called differently in this software, these two modes are actually what would come as a standard storyboard and a timeline. Since these are the most recognizable workflow modules among video editing software, users might need some time getting used to Nero’s unique setup. One serious omission this product has is the inability to move, or switch between the main two operating modes. Since most beginner users create their projects in the Express (storyboard) mode and then export it to the Advanced (timeline) module for fine-tuning, this can be a deal breaker for many potential buyers.

If you can go past the module blunder, you’ll notice that Nero actually has a very decent list of video editing tools that allow you to create professional-looking video projects. When you’re making some more delicate, complex tweaks in the Advanced mode, you’ll be able to load as many media editing tracks as you need which gives you greater creative freedom. If you want to add some effects or objects to your project, Nero comes with more than 400 transitions, effects and other objects used to further modify your video.

When we tested the products we recommend in our review, we created a 45-second video to test the output video quality of each software. Although Nero had satisfying speed results, when we tried using it to compress a large resolution video file into a smaller one it showed disappointing results. The final product had a lot of visual imperfections like motion blur, pixelation and a distorted image that would most certainly impair you watching experience.

When you’ve finished creating your video, Nero lets you share it with the world in several different ways. Aside from creating the usual hard drive copy on your computer, you can also choose to save your project in one of the 12 offered video formats. Although other video editors allow you to upload your finished project on to multiple popular websites, Nero Video only allows sharing on YouTube. Another option would be to create a physical copy of your work by burning it onto a DVD/Blu-Ray disc, but you’ll need appropriate hardware to do that. This app also doesn’t have a playback optimizer that would allow you to customize each of your projects for playback on different platforms like smartphones, tablets or consoles.
