PROS:
CONS:
FreeAgent is a good option to consider if you are a freelancer or have a small business. On one hand, it includes some really impressive features, such as multi-currency, useful invoicing tools and unlimited users. On the other hand, inventory management and reports are quite limited.
FreeAgent is a cloud-based accounting software, suited for small businesses and freelancers. It was launched in 2007 by two British freelancers.
It is currently used by more than 70,000 businesses and the number continues to grow.
FreeAgent has only one pricing plan available for its US version. The plan includes unlimited users, unlimited projects and customers and doesn’t come with any setup fees or contract.
The software works with all major browsers, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer (11 and above).
It is web-based, which means you don’t have to download and install anything on your device, except for their available mobile apps. The mobile apps are compatible with iOS and Android devices.
How it works and features
The setup process is easy and simple. You first have to enter all the necessary info about your business, set the time zone and date format (because you’ll most likely want the US format, not the UK one), your currency and your bank account.
The dashboard allows you to rearrange the cards according to your preferences, but when it comes to ease of use, you have to take some time to learn the program. Not everything is easy to see and find, and not all tools have their individual tabs. For instance, to get to invoicing or time tracking, you have to go to Work, and to get to inventory, income and expenses, you have to click on Settings.
The toolbar consists of several sections: Overview, Contacts, Work, Bills, My Money, Banking, Taxes, Accounting.
You’re going to find most of your interesting tools under Work: estimates, invoicing, time tracking and more.
On the dashboard you get graphs and charts with your business activity, you can keep track of your expenses, profit and loss, projects, banking and cashflow.
There are 8 invoice templates to choose from and you can customize them but just in terms of logo and the header; if you want to go deeper into the process, some CSS knowledge is required, which might be a drawback for some.
You can organize your invoices based on contacts and projects, you can set up recurring invoices and reminders for automatic payments. You can also create a customized default e-mail message for your invoices.
You’ve got expense tracking, contact management, an inventory tool named ‘Price List & Stock’ and you can also create and manage bills (including recurring ones).
FreeAgent integrates with Stripe and PayPal and your clients can pay their invoices online using their credit card.
FreeAgent has a built-in timer that allows you to track billable/unbillable time. Hours can also be introduced manually.
Another great thing about FreeAgent is the fact that it supports more than 100 currencies and 28 languages.
When it comes to reports, FreeAgent is quite limited, only gives you the basics. You get 7 reports: Profit and Loss, Aged Creditors, Aged Debtors, Show Transactions, Capital Assets, Balance Sheet, Trial Balance.
Bank statements can be imported through .ofx, .qif, .csv and .qbo. If you want to important contacts, you can do it via FreshBooks, Google Mail, Apple Mail, Microsoft Outlook.
FreeAgent is really generous in some aspects, such as the unlimited users and projects, the multi-currency support, the 30-day free trial and some really useful features in terms of time tracking and invoicing. However, if you live in the United States, payroll capabilities are almost inexistent, and for the monthly fee charged, the program is quite limited when it comes to reports and inventory management tools.
There is only one Universal plan available, which costs $10/month for the first 6 months and after the first 6 months you’ll be charged $20/month.
You also get a free 30-day trial, with no credit card requirements. All you have to do is fill out a form with your name and e-mail, your business name and business type.
