PROS:
CONS:
In spite of its ‘New Gen’ name, the Dualit toaster is a very vintage looking toaster which you either love or completely dislike. It is handmade in the UK, it has a manual timer and lever, it is extremely durable, it is very fast but it lacks some common features found in most toasters. It is also very expensive.
The Dualit 4 slot New Gen is a 4 slice toaster manufactured by Dualit, a British home appliances company with more than 70 years of experience in the field. Dualit is famous for its Classic Toaster with its recognizable design. The company also manufactures coffee and tea capsules and a wide range of other kitchen appliances.
The 4-slice New Gen toaster has the following specifications:

The Dualit New Gen toaster is handmade in the UK and it is built like a tank. It comes in a variety of colors (around 20) and it has a very extravagant design and a vintage look. It is quite bulky and heavy, so expect it to take up a lot of space in your kitchen.
It isn’t just suited for home use but also commercial purposes, as it can toast up to 130 slices/hour.
The Dualit New Gen has 4 slots, a removable tray and an adjustable rear foot, in case the surface you want to place it on is uneven. It has patented ProHeat elements with ‘a protective armor plated layer covering the filament making them virtually unbreakable’, to quote them accurately. This award-winning technology increases the lifespan of the toaster.
Now for the interesting part: although we included the toaster in our ‘pop-up’ category, the Dualit New Gen is not a pop-up toaster per se, in that it doesn’t pop up your bread once it is ready. You have to insert the slice into the toaster, set the mechanical timer by twisting it to your desired time, pull the lever to lower your bread and then, once the toast is ready, press the eject lever and take your toast out. The slices won’t pop up by themselves otherwise, they will just be kept warm until you get them out. So it is not just the design that it is a bit old-school, the mechanism is also ‘retro style’.
The timer has 5 options for the browning level (half a minute, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes or 4 minutes) and when your bread is ready, the timer pings so that you know the toasting cycle is done. In order to get a medium browning you should use the 2 minute setting of the timer.
The lever allows you to raise the bread and check the progress without interrupting the toasting cycle.
In addition to the 4-minute timer, there is a selector control for bagels, a defrost function and the option to heat only 1, 2, 3 or all the 4 slots.
For an extra $20 you can also buy the Dualit sandwich cage which can be placed on top of the toaster and allows you to quickly toast delicious sandwiches. There is also another useful accessory, the warming rack, which you can purchase for warming your croissants or other pastries.
There is no Cancel feature and no Reheat one on the Dualit New Gen. If you want to stop using the toaster you simply twist the timer to the 0 position and if you want to ‘reheat’ your bread, you can set the timer to the 30 seconds setting. That’s about the closest you can get to benefit of those two functions.
The slots of the toaster are not very deep so you might have some problems fitting in any type of bread/slice or bagel. Also, the slices aren’t really centered properly so they tend to lean on one side or another, which may translate into a slightly uneven toasting.
On the other hand, the speed of the Dualit New Gen is impressive, well above the average. We also liked the fact that you can heat only the slot/s you are using, which is a pretty unique feature.
The Dualit 4-slot New Gen is quite an extravagant appliance and in our opinion, too expensive for its capabilities. It is really fast, extremely well build and durable, it performs well and has a large capacity but its mechanism, design and price are definitely not for everyone.
The Dualit 4-slot New Gen toaster is a bit pricey. On Amazon you can get it for $320. The product comes with a one year warranty for all the components except the ProHeat elements which have a 2-year warranty.
